Introduction to Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a physical condition that usually occurs in babies or young children. Few people understand CP in developed countries and in the less developed countries it is even understood even less. This series of ten articles attempts to dispel some of the misconceptions and myths about cerebral palsy, and aims to give the reader some basic background information.
This article is provided including:
• Individuals who have cerebral palsy, and would like to sharessome information about CP with family, friends or carers;
• Parents or caregivers have or suspect that their child may have cerebral palsy;
• teachers, social workers or health care professional.
Before going into what is cerebral palsy in fact, here are some misunderstandings. First, cerebral palsy is not contagious: it is not "catch" it like a flu from another person can catch it. Second, CP is not hereditary: there is no genetic marker fordefine or predict who have the condition, and who is not. Third, cerebral palsy is not life threatening, it will not constitute a direct threat to their survival.
However, it is conceivable that environmental challenges such as accessibility of buildings and other structures, a health threat to humans may be associated with cerebral palsy, and they may cause damage or injury. There are several causes of cerebral palsy, and therefore very different in nature, severity andManagement and coping strategies. As such, people who are affected by CP in a unique way.
Finally, having cerebral palsy is in itself an obstacle to leading an enjoyable and productive life. However, with CP now has some real challenges. To cope well with CP, one should also be informed about such problems and is constantly aware of the options and possibilities.
